One solid right hand, one knee to the body, then a hip toss followed by a machine gun battering of short rights on the ground. With that, Davis (16-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC) was out and Rousey (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) was still the champ.
The women’s bantamweight title bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC 175 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The lone bright spot for Davis came immediately at the start of the bout, as she marched to the center of the cage and promptly landed a straight punch that popped Rousey’s back ever so slightly. After that, things got bad for the Canadian challenger.
Rousey stunned Davis with a right hand of her own, then dug a knee into her body before tossing her like a rag doll and going to work with short right hands on the ground. After half a dozen or so, Davis’ body went momentarily limp, prompting referee Yves Lavigne to step in and call a halt to the bout at 0:16 of the first round. Davis’ body appeared to be on auto-pilot by then, as she continued to cling to Rousey’s body and then attempted a single-leg takedown on Lavigne, who struggled to make her understand that the bout was over.
Even after such a quick and dominant performance, Rousey insisted there was still room for improvement.
I got clipped once, and I don’t want to let that happen again,” Rousey told UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.
The drama for Rousey didn’t end there, however, as Rogan said he was being told to ask whether she’d be willing to step in at UFC 176 in August, an event that recently lost its headliner when UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo withdrew due to injury. Rousey appeared slightly stunned by the question, and said she already has a knee surgery scheduled, but she’d consult her coaches on the matter.
